Tree Trimmer – City of Seattle DOT

Position Description
The Urban Forestry Division within Maintenance Operations of the Seattle Department of Transportation presents an exceptional opportunity working with a team of professionals whose mission is to deliver a safe, reliable, efficient, and socially equitable transportation system that enhances Seattle’s environment and economic vitality.  This position performs tree care activities such as pruning and removing green belt, arterial and residential street trees.  Tree care is conducted to provide for public safety, protection of property, and for the health and longevity of City trees.  The Tree Trimmer reports to the Tree Crew Supervisor.


Job Responsibilities
  • Participates in the work of a tree crew
  • Prunes, and removes green belt, arterial, park, and street trees to provide public safety and maintain healthy trees
  • Climbs trees of varying heights using rope, saddles, spurs, ladders, or aerial hydraulic lift truck to safely prune or remove trees
  • Fells trees and salvages fallen timber, removes trees and stumps
  • Responds to emergency calls to remove damaged sections or entire trees
  • Maintains, inspects, and operates a variety of equipment such as hydraulic aerial lift trucks, hand and power saws, compressors, wood chippers, winches, blowers, and stump cutters
  • Evaluates tree health for potential hazard to property and public safety
  • Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice

Required Experience

  • One-year experience in urban forestry, landscape maintenance, tree farming, or tree trimming which involves the use of safety harnesses, climbing equipment, aerial hydraulic lift trucks, rigging, and chain saws and includes the application of arboricultural practices, proper pruning methods, and related safety practices (combinations of education, training, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability)
  • Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base

Licensing/Certification/Other Requirements

  • Current Washington State CDL driver’s license
  • Pre-Placement Physical:  A job offer is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-placement physical exam
  • Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR card, and Flagging/Traffic Control card within 90 days of employment
  • Additional training and Washington Pesticide Operator’s License may be required for some positions
  • Familiarity with State and Federal regulations regarding tree trimming is required
  • A background check may be required for this position

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Required to stand, walk, climb trees, or bend for extended periods
  • Frequently required to lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds
  • May require handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances
  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Required to be on-call at all times in case of emergencies
  • Required to work at varying heights and within legal/safe distances to electrical hazards and with the possible dangers of falling
  • Required to operate machinery and equipment with extreme caution, including hydraulic aerial lift trucks, wood chippers, stump cutters, winches, chainsaws, and handsaws

Desired Qualifications

  • Journey Line Clearance Tree Trimmer
  • ISA Certified Arborist or Certified Tree Worker
  • Experience working along high-volume transportation corridors or related sites where pedestrian and traffic control measures are required for work operations
  • Knowledge and practical experience in work site hazard/traffic safety setup
  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Multilingual
